KNIT CAFE

The Vermilion Bay Yarn Company offers two week-night sessions of Knit Cafe, a special time for fiber workers to gather in the evenings to sit, eat, visit, knit, crochet, etc.  The “cafe” is open from 6pm until 8pm on Tuesday and Thursday nights.  The shop offers coffee and basic soft drinks free to Knit Cafe participants, but the rest is potluck, so bring your favorite food item to share.  Please note, that Vermilion Bay is not a food establishment and does not prepare or sell food on the premises.  Also, bringing potluck items on Knit Cafe evenings is a suggestion, but not a commandment.  No one is ever obligated to bring food to Knit Cafe, but our stomachs certainly enjoy it when you do!  Knit Cafe is always FREE.

Why “Knit Cafe”?  Vermilion Bay did not invent the title for our week-night get-togethers.  We’re actually borrowing the name of a fantastic yarn shop in Leipzig, Germany called “Strickcafe”.  It’s a place very similar to ours where fiber fans of all ages and genders gather together to engage in creative fiber projects while sharing the company of others who are likewise interested in fiber arts.

Fiber arts bring about connections – keeping connected to each other and knitting ourselves into a community are so very important.  This sense of “community” and “family” is one of the bedrock values of our South Louisiana culture.  When meeting someone for the first time, we naturally try to establish a connection with them and welcome them into community: “Who’s ya mama?” the saying goes.  In Acadiana, we always seek to establish a connection with others, be it though relatives, mutual friends, or shared commonality of interest – for us, the love of creating beautiful things from spun fibers.  No one is a stranger, no one is an outsider, and all are invited in to share our unique Joie de Vivre!  In a community, we get to know each other well, rely on each other, and benefit from shared, good council.  In the fiber world, such communities exist all over the globe, doing similar things as we.  Reaching out and connecting is what we do best. Vermilion Bay’s Knit Cafe is our local portion of the world-wide fiber working universe.  Come in and make a connection!

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS
All hand work is about creation, but more, it’s about innovation.  Even the most seasoned, experienced knitter always has more to discover – new techniques are being developed and old ones are being improved as constantly as new patterns are being designed and new yarn blends are being spun.

Beginners’ Classes:  Haven’t learned to knit or crochet?  You learned years ago but are a bit rusty on the basics? Schedule a time for a quick refresher!  From time to time, Vermilion Bay will schedule a group beginners’ class, but the easiest way to learn is one-on-one – you can’t beat having your own attentive, helpful teacher sitting beside you to guide you step by step.  Beginner’s sessions are scheduled according to your convenience during shop hours.  Give us a call or stop by to set up a lesson.  The basic lesson fee is $20 for a two-hour, one-on-one session.

Technique Workshops: The Vermilion Bay Yarn Company offers regularly scheduled classes on specific techniques to improve and expand your  fiber working knowledge.  Technique workshops are designed for knitters who have already mastered the basics.  Workshops are priced according to the number of sessions.

Project Classes: Work a project with a group of knitters at the same time with constant help and guidance by an instructor.  This is the “safety in numbers” approach for complicated patterns or patterns that might involve new or unusual specialty techniques.  A project class will help you reach a new level in your fiber work while minimizing frustration and maximizing success.  It’s a great confidence builder for fiber fans to explore more of the vast fiber art universe!  There’s so much more out there to experience apart from the same old mile-long rectangle!

Where do I sign up? Come by the shop and peruse the class offerings for the month posted on the Classes And Events Bulletin Board.  Registration is easy: just sign your name on the registration sheet.  Class fees can be paid any time from sign-up to the day of the class.  Class fees are non-refundable.

Want a particular class? Tell us!  Class suggestions are like Fair Isle: we’ll work it in.
